In 2025, the produce aisle saw modest but steady growth, with overall sales climbing +2.7%. This increase was driven primarily by a +2.0% rise in volume, indicating that shoppers were buying more produce rather than just paying higher prices.
Several key trends emerged this year:
- Organic Continues to Climb: Organic produce sales outpaced conventional, growing +4.2%, with a significant +5.3% increase in volume sold.
- Fruit Leads the Way: The fruit category was the clear winner, with sales growth of +5.5%. In contrast, vegetable sales remained nearly flat at -0.2%.
- More Frequent Trips for Fruit: According to Circana’s household panel data, while the number of households buying produce was stable, the total dollars spent on fruit jumped +6.6%. This was driven by consumers making more frequent trips to the store for fruit (+3.7% increase in trips).
Interestingly, 2025 saw flat household purchasing for many of the most popular individual fruits and vegetables, including potatoes (-0.1%), berries (+0.3%), bananas (0.0%), onions (-0.4%), tomatoes (-0.1%), and apples (0.0%). However, the fruit category as a whole benefited from shoppers' increased purchasing frequency.
